Lesson:

Both children and adults are sensitive to the words they hear.  Especially in a conversation with someone in the family whom they love.

It is important as a parent that you communicate with your children in a way that is supportive and non-threatening.  Encourage them.  Praise them.  Show them that you care about them.

Positive communication can actually build a child’s self esteem.  Self-esteem is the way a person feels about himself.  A person with a high self-esteem feels confident and good about the person she is inside.  Someone with a low self-esteem may feel shy, depressed, and lonely.  You can help build your child’s self-esteem listening when they have something to say and making them feel as if they are important.

You can also destroy a child’s self-esteem by using insults or put-downs when you are angry.
